University of Sheffield

Dr. Heba Ismail is as a lecturer and a Versus Arthritis fellow within the Clinical Medicine division at the University of Sheffield. Her academic journey led her to obtain a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from University College London(UCL) in 2009. Following this, she became a postdoctoral fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, Imperial College London. In 2011, she transitioned to the University of Oxford as a senior postdoctoral fellow in the Osteoarthritis Centre of Excellence.
During her postdoctoral tenure, Heba's research primarily focused on unraveling the complex molecular mechanisms driving osteoarthritis. She dedicated her efforts to delineating the cellular events triggered by mechanical tissue injury and identifying the key upstream mechanisms involved in this process. In 2018, Heba joined the University of Sheffield, where she was awarded a Versus Arthritis Fellowship, enabling her to establish and lead her research group.
The Ismail Lab,  is focusing on investigating the ubiquitination machinery that underlies chronic inflammation and tissue damage in osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal diseases. The ultimate goal of the lab research is to identify potential therapeutic targets that could open new avenues for innovative treatments of these diseases.
