Marcel Karperien
University of Twente
Marcel Karperien studied biology at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After his postdoctoral training at Leiden University Medical Centre he moved to the University of Twente to establish the Developmental BioEngineering group. The aim of his research is to develop technology inspired solutions for the treatment of osteoarthritis. His current work involves the development of an injectable implant for the treatment of focal cartilage defects which is currently tested in a clinical trial, the development intra-articular injection therapies using VHH antibody fragments as novel disease modifying osteoarthritic drugs in combination with materials for the controlled and sustained delivery of the VHH, the identification of biomarkers for early osteoarthritis and the engineering of innovative joint on chip platforms to study pathofysiological mechanisms of osteoarthritis and to test new disease modifying drugs.
