Carla Scanzello

Carla R. Scanzello, MD PhD is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology with a conjoint appointment in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. She serves as Associate Director of the VA CReATE Motion Center and the Translational Musculoskeletal Research Center at the Corporal Crescenz VA Medical Center (CMC VAMC) in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Scanzello received her MD and PhD from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, and completed her residency and Rheumatology Fellowship training at Weill Cornell Medical Center & the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She is an active member of the American College of Rheumatology, the Orthopedics Research Society and the Osteoarthritis Research Society International, serves as an Associate Editor for Arthritis and Rheumatology and is on the editorial board of Osteoarthritis & Cartilage. Her clinical practice and laboratory are based at the CMC VAMC, where she runs a translational research program funded by the NIH and the VA ORD. Her research aims to understand how the innate immune system contributes to Osteoarthritis (OA) pathology and progression, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic strategies for this debilitating disease.
