Felix Eckstein

Felix Eckstein was born in Freiburg, Germany; he studied Medicine in Freiburg, Heidelberg, Bristol, and Innsbruck. He graduated in 1991 to then join the Institute of Anatomy at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München. In 2003, he founded Chondrometrics GmbH, a leading provider of medial image analysis services to researchers in academia and in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2004, Felix Eckstein became Professor of Anatomy and Director of the Institute of Anatomy at Paracelsus Medical University (PMU) in Salzburg, Austria. His research focuses on the integration of imaging methodology for understanding the morphology, function and patho-physiology of musculoskeletal tissues, particularly in osteoarthritis Felix Eckstein was president of the German Society of Biomechanics, Board Member, and Secretary General of OARSI. In 2007, he founded the International Workshop on Osteoarthritis Imaging (IWOAI) and in 2010 received the “Clinical Research Award” from OARSI. In 2013 he was nominated to be member of the German National Academy of Science, Leopoldina. Felix Eckstein assumed a Research Professorship at PMU in 2019, and is now Head of the Research Program for Musculoskeletal Imaging at the Center for Anatomy & Cell Biology. His group is part of the Ludwig Boltzmann Cluster on Arthritis and Rehabilitation (LBIAR) and currently receives funding from the PROTO “advanced PeRsOnalized therapies” project (EU/Horizon Europe).
